Global video streaming had revenue over $26.5 billion dollars in 2020 and is forecast to grow to $27.5 billion dollars this year.

People use the internet to stream all sorts of programming, from news to on-demand content. More sophisticated mobile phones, along with more people using the internet has also helped the trend in streaming. Over 4 billion people now use the internet worldwide. They love to use their phones and tablets not only to watch streaming video and gain information, but they also use it to broadcast their own content.

There are more places than ever to stream programs on-demand. Services like Hulu and Netflix offer on-demand content and have grown tremendously. Major production studios have recently joined the market with services like Peacock, Paramount Plus, and Disney Plus.

In the beginning, live streaming on social media platforms was not interactive. But then the three big social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube created messaging apps for viewers to interact with live broadcasts. They all let viewers ask questions and make comments during live video streams.

Radio Impacted by Streaming Music Services

The radio is losing listeners to music streaming. Music streaming grew 20% in 2020. Spotify and Apple Music led this trend. Younger listeners prefer streaming their music on their phones and computer over listening to music on the radio. Music streaming lets them listen to millions of titles and play them from any device. Pay music streaming cuts out the things that they don’t want to hear, like commercials.

Podcasts are drawing older listeners away from the radio too. Podcasts present information and content they can listen to on-demand, which also takes listeners away from the radio.

Streaming Services Not Going Away

The use of streaming services was already on the rise, but the pandemic really pushed companies to grow to meet the demands of consumers hungry for content. Being stuck at home for weeks on end enabled millions of people worldwide to devour streaming services. They have come to rely on it for their entertainment and information while marketers have begun to use it to build their brands.
